  8.     my hands are too soft. they used to be rough, calloused.
  9.     they would get caught on the hay in the barn i kept a
  10.     horse in. they would get pinched and dry from the ropes
  11.     i tied on the boat my parents owned. they would
  12.     get torn on the lawnmower i used every Saturday to cut
  13.     the grass. they were strong from stocking shelves at the
  14.     grocery store. my hands had character. they were used.
  15.     you could point out the tender parts on the flesh
  16.     and figure out how they got there. they weren't the
  17.     pale smooth beacons of laziness they are today. i
  18.     remember when they would be stained with ink and oils
  19.     from the writing and painting i did. now they are
  20.     keyboard pure, and it is obvious that they do nothing
  21.     but type.

  23.     don't get me wrong. computers are hard work. but sometimes
  24.     i miss the tactile side of life, where hay is rough
  25.     and paint brushes scratch on the canvas, instead of
  26.     the cool clean existence i have today. i still write,
  27.     but the handwriting is in a monospace font stored as
  28.     bits, instead of messy writing on roughened lined
  29.     paper. i still paint, but the medium is electrons and
  30.     the tool is a tablet, the canvas is a software program.
  31.     too clean, too surreal.

  33.     i consider the work i do for f.u.c.k. and the web sites i
  34.     design to be creative expressions. but i fear now that
  35.     i lean too heavily on technology.. certainly the quality
  36.     of the work i do now has improved. much better than
  37.     the chicken scratches on paper i used to create with
  38.     colored pencil and pen. it seems that with spell
  39.     checkers and editors and photoshop, the realm of
  40.     possibility is simultaneously more closed and more open.
  41.     on one hand, i can combine elements in photoshop that
  42.     would be difficult to replicate on paper or canvas...
  43.     say, a photo, the earth, a texture, and a 3D object.
  44.     and when i type at the keyboard, my hands do not
  45.     tire, and i am more focused on the words than i am
  46.     when i write on paper.. no worries about hand cramps,
  47.     neatness. mistakes can be erased as if by magic, and
  48.     no trace is left in vi when i make changes. yet, there
  49.     is less of an ability to play with the shapes of words,
  50.     say, in a poem, and there is less of a personal touch
  51.     in a rendered photoshop creation.

  53.     i enjoy the hours i spend at my machine creating random
  54.     things. but something is missing, something i cannot
  55.     quite put my finger on. perhaps the aura of technology
  56.     makes the work seem less of an act of creativity and
  57.     more of a demonstration of technical prowess. perhaps
  58.     the lack of the tactile makes the work seem less
  59.     tedious and too simple. i do not know what it is, but
  60.     i am reluctant to return to the tactile and see that
  61.     my talent is non-existent.

  63.     i guess it is time to buy a scanner, so that the waters
  64.     of creation seem less treacherous.
